Loves the flesh

Born in New Jersey in 1977, Ryan McGinley is a photographer who uses alot of nude subjects. His work in the early years of this decade included trips away to desolete locations with young people who keen to frolick nude. I'd totally have done it. On a shoot in Mexico, Mcginley's teen subjects were culture savvy minds; musicians, artists and skateboarders that included none other than Donald Cumming and Wade Oates from the band The Virgins. Musician Lissy Trullie was also in the mix, posing for McGinley in his early works.

Outta Control

Released at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival,Control is the biopic of Ian Curtis from the band Joy Division. Before Joy Division became New Order, and well... when Curtis was still alive (R.I.P), his eclectic style and spontaneous actions were highly entertaining. He was - in essence, definitive of both the musical and social climate of the time. His influence and inspiration have proved worthy for Anton Corbijn to document as his directorial debut. Sam Riley, actor and Burberry model, executes Curtis's character with an uncanny semblance; all the way down to his walking man/running man/spazzing out man....dance. As a devout Joy Division fan, Corbijn's vision is accurate enough to emotionally affect you, while being entertaining enough to keep you wanting more. Deborah Curtis, Ian's widow also acts as a co-producer of the film, presenting a rawness and authenticity that makes you realise how heavy life can be when your mind is a bit(heaps)bent. The film was shot on colour stock and printed to black and white to reflect the atmosphere and the mood of the era, a bleak late 70's setting where working as a civil servant in Macclesfield didn't quite cut it for Ian Curtis the dreamer. Joy Divisions post punk aesthetic and their deep, dark lyrics provide this biopic with the substance to make it a highly recommendable piece of art. Enjoy.
